Contacting people to help with the project seemed difficult
at first, but as I spoke to other teachers on campus, they all offered their
expertise. In doing so, 4 other math
teacher were able to help me with the building of the lesson, coming up with
the rubric and ideas such as thinking maps to build upon the requirements of
the school as well. (Using thinking maps
is one of them). We also wanted to make
sure that building the oven would be realistic and we are still trying to make
our own model as well.
So far I have only made contact with teachers on campus, I
have emailed a couple of math teachers at different schools, but none has
replied as of today. I know everyone is
busy getting ready as we start the new school year.
This project would be conducted during the 2nd
semester/4th quarter, I think that hopefully as we get closer to it,
I would have students make their own plans to contact local businesses such as
Longs, Foodland to help donate some of the material that will be needed in
order to make their oven.
Within the planning stages as I was talking to colleagues
about the project I felt a sense of excitement that maybe this year I could
have a project that students might be able to make the connections from math to
real life situations. As most students
often question….”When am I really going to use math?”
