Final Touches

I haven’t added anything to the lesson, if anything I just would add on a multimedia presentation to entice students to invite their peers to come witness the Fastest Melting Marshmallow.  I think that if they promote their products would give students a boost of confidence and in return would reflect in their work that they put into this project.

I need HELP STUDENTS!

Students, this project is crucial and I need YOUR help!  Although this is a group effort, please remember that every member of your group must take responsibility for at least one task to make sure that this project will be successful!

This project will be broken down into several tasks, which will be worked on during class for the remaining two weeks of the quarter before assessments.  THIS IS YOUR FINAL assessment, showing me that you have understood the math concepts entailed.

For your assessment, you will construct and test your oven.

Every summer my family and I go camping with friends at Bellows, in Waimanalo.  Every year each family cooks a meal for dinner and every year we experience an EPIC FAIL!  Last year, we tried using a dutch oven which took too long to cook anything decent and the year before that we used an open fire, which ended up burning our dinner.  Eventually, we ended up with hungry stomachs and very unsatisfied friends and family.  In talking to other teachers about my awful camping cooking experiences, one teacher had mentioned that a parabolic oven might solve my problem, materials are inexpensive, easy to make and fast!  Please help me and my family get some ideas to make a parabolic oven.

Using the vertex form of equation

Y = a(x-h)2 + k
(h, k) is the vertex

In your project please include the following:
  • Title page
  • Circle Map
  • Tree Map
  • Graph of parabola
  • Definition of focus point (h, k, p)
  • Write how your group made a parabolic oven
  • Explain how it works and how the focus point is important to a parabolic oven
  • How you can make a better design
  • Reflection
  • What did you like/dislike about the project
  • How can we make this project better

FASTEST MELTING MARSHMALLOW CONTEST!

This year, we want to make a statement by displaying your best works in the library.  As a group, create a poster (or flyer) inviting the whole student body to participate and come see your awesome skills in creating your very own parabolic oven.  Invite friends and teachers to come out to support you during the contest held on _____________________ .  Camera crews from our very own Cinema Tech will be there to film this contest and everyone will also have a chance to see your work in the library from __________________ to __________________.

This 10 week course has taught me the value of reflection and editing.  Being able to ask my colleagues questions that help this project become better was an eye-opener.  I wouldn’t have been able to conduct a project like this without the expertise and knowledge of my colleagues who were so willing to help even though I thought I was becoming into a madman hunting my peers down for their opinions.  Being able to work on a project that had some type of “novelty” for students meant a lot for me, I thought that if they could relate the story to the lesson, it would become more of just “learning within the classroom” but giving them an opportunity to build something based on a math concept made me more excited than ever and I think the students would appreciate this project more than just paper/pencil and lecture type of learning. I think I have also learned to accept other people’s ideas and acknowledge that not all my ideas are great no matter how I twist and turn the situation.  I also gained a great deal of knowledge building this oven even if it took a couple of times to get it right which in itself is the learning process.  I hope that my students will realize the importance of whatever they learn within the classrooms has significance and can be applicable in the real world as well.

Peer Review

Aloha friends, colleagues and students:

I am inviting you to critique a lesson that I have been working on for the past couple of weeks, your feedback is very much needed in order for this project to be successful for our students.   The rough draft of my project is below:

Assignment #10

My sample oven didn’t quite make it this far.  The prototype wasn’t up to my standards and therefore I decided to make another one that was sturdier and well-constructed.

I used recycled boxes, mail boxes and cut them up for the sides of my oven.  Next I glued down some graphing paper to both sides.

Using the equation for my parabola, I was able to determine the focus  and the given line.

Wrapped my parabola in foil using it as a conductor of heat.

Taped my parabola to both sides, poked a skewer where my focus points are on both sides.  I used Saran wrap to cover my Marshmallows to avoid getting dust into them, making s’mores sounded like a great idea!

Voila!  My awesome parabolic oven that took 23 minutes for my Marshmallows to melt in 83◦F  of pure heat.

Assignment #9

I’ve been hesitant on displaying student work as it might be more of a challenge than I thought, as 30 parabolic ovens would definitely take up a great deal of space in my tiny room.  Talking to my colleague, he thought that it would be best to hold a contest based on all categories:

a.      Fastest heating up parabolic oven
b.     Best aesthetically looking parabolic oven
c.     Creative parabolic oven

The winner would get bragging rights and a spot to display the winning oven in the classroom along with the step-by-step necessary documents that support the making of an awesome parabolic oven.

Another idea that was brought up in our learning team meeting was to have students display their ovens after the contest in a section in the library along with their documents leading up to the making of the parabolic oven, this way students can be proud of their own work and others can enjoy it as well!

After contemplating my colleagues ideas, I’ve decided to do both.  Run a contest and display their work in the library.  Running the contest would take some promoting to do which I could include into their project, making posters and flyers to distribute to students to come observe the fastest  melting Marshmallow contest.  I have talked to the librarians and they have agreed to give me a small area in the library where students would display their work for about a week.  I also have talked to the Cinema & Tech classes to invite them to film this mini event.  Hopefully the weather cooperates as somehow, it always rains here in Wahiawa.
